Is life this simple with regards to reality. As a society do we go through changes like this?

Sometimes in life people would try to change the part that makes you “You”. A short story of a boy who is trying to find his self. Is this something that we should let happen? What is the little boys issues?
This is self discovery out of need. Is this something that shows us that we as a society need to figure out a way to look at the world? Our parents have the ability to see things that we have never thought of.
